I did not go to the mall this Christmas (funds low). Instead, I opened the house in which I live to a homeless family (mother, father, 8-year old daughter), and teenager whose family was traveling and thinking of placing her in a motel. I went from not making any plans for Christmas, for the first time ever (trials and tribulations of the past year), to creating a "Christmas family," of unrelated members. Little 8-year old Shelby is going to break a record in toys received (friends chipped in and the Fire Dept. "assisted" Santa).

This could turn out to be one of the best Christmases of my life!

This is the first time that I have responded to your e-mails. They are inspiring. Please keep them coming.

Every year I always write a letter and tell my friend, relative, etc., how much they mean to mean and how thankful that I am that I've worked with them, shared troubled times, etc. And the feedback that I get over the years is that it's the best Christmas gift they get is to be acknowledged, appreciated, and acknowledged.

Merry Christmas, Mike! (and family /staff)

Our family definitely understands what you mean; last year was really hectic with trying to buy gifts for everyone and not wanting to miss anyone. The result: a very stressful experience, both timewise and moneywise.

This year we bypassed the whole mall shopping trips, not out of choice, but of necessity: my husband had two injuries this year, one at work, and one outside work; the latter was a vehicle accident which gave him a concussion and severe whiplash.

He's been off work since the end of May and has been waiting (we have been waiting, very patiently) for his work's insurance company to pay him his long-term-disability benefits. They discontinued his short-term benefits on Sept. 09, so, basically, we have had little income since then.

They have given us the run-around; passed his file from person-to-person, and given me three pages of their stalling tactics. We will see what happens on December 29 when they are supposed to make their final decision.

In the meantime, there has been no money for Christmas presents for our children, and we have had to increase our overdraft just for groceries and gas.

We have told our children, of course, what the real meaning of Christmas is and they understand. I read them the following story:

which I thought really hit the mark, particularly, since they will actually receive something tomorrow morning, from a kind group who came bearing their own gifts.

It is truly a blessing when people demonstrate the gift of kindness, especially when they do not fully understand someone's situation, but give anyway, with no questions or interrogations. Just to give, from a heart full of compassion, that is the true spirit of Christmas.

You give so much.. I'll share this..Last night as I watched our local T.V. Carols. One of the acts, "The Choir of Hard Knocks" sang one of the most beautiful Christmas Carols I have ever heard, not because of the melody or the lyrics...But seeing the sick and the homeless up on stage giving the only thing they had in the world back to the community was deeply moving. I was truly touched.....

Many were going home for Christmas for the first time in over 3o years...

Christmas morning started for us with having to get the ambulance for our 96 year old mother who fell getting out of bed. She's fine! But our family get-together for Christmas was so sad as Mom, Grandma, and Great-grandma wasn't there. So much relief when doctors said nothing is broken but we'll keep her for a few days to observe her. So the grandchildren and great grandchildren called her and sang her Christmas songs over the phone. Children brought gifts and goodies to the hospital. And everyone thought about what a wonderful gift she has been to all of us, 6 kids, 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren throughout the years. The beautiful gift of herself that she so lovingly has bestowed on us for many years.

Your gift, Mike, only brings home to me all the more - it's not the gifts UNDER the tree that are important - but the people AROUND the tree you are celebrating with that are the true gifts in our lives.

All I can say is God bless you all, and you can be my fire-fighter on my crew anytime, you are all more positive that you could ever know, just the fact that your making a post says that. When I pull up on the scene of a bad fire, wreck, multiple shooting, whatever, I always see the positive outcome before it happens. I see this with my inner mind, and not my eyes, so go for what you what whatever it is, but play the movie in your mind over and over, Think about it all the time, all the time.
